How to Do DNA Paternity Test During Pregnancy
For a non-invasive prenatal paternity DNA test, the following DNA samples are required:
- Mother’s blood: drawn from a vein and placed in specialized test tubes (samples can be collected at our facility).
- Mother’s cheek swab.
- Potential father’s cheek swab or practically any DNA-containing material (hair, nails, toothbrush, cigarette butts, etc.).
The paternity DNA test during early pregnancy compares genetic markers between the potential father and the fetus. In prenatal diagnostics, we isolate the genetic markers of the fetus and compare them to the DNA profile of the potential father(s).
The fetal DNA sample is obtained from the mother’s blood. After the blood is collected in special test tubes with anticoagulant agents, it undergoes a process called centrifugation. This process separates the red blood cells from the plasma. The fetal DNA is then extracted from the plasma.
The process of taking DNA samples from participants is completely painless and takes about 4-6 minutes. Often, the DNA sample used for this genetic test is a buccal swab taken with a cotton swab (cheek epithelial cell collection), also known as a saliva test (standard DNA sample).
